I know it’s a bit late for start of year talk, but screw you I’m doing it. Music is offering many things to look forward to in this new year and the chance of dissapointment is low.
First up on the music side we have The Gallows sophomore effort Grey Britian. Judging from the promo track Gold Dust which was released for free download on the band website, The Gallows new album will have a much more focused and tight sound. Bringing up the intensity and dialing in the heavy expect and leaner, angrier Gallows.
Next up is Mastodon forth-coming fourth Crack the Skye. In many recent interviews the band have cited a more classic rock influence and boasted of a more direct, closed sound. (No doubt a return from the sprawling soundscapes of Blood Mountain.) Lyrically however, this new album should be the most labrynthine to date, involving advanced meta-physics, Rasputin and theological punishment.
Alexisonfire are expected to have a new release this year as well. This is where my personal trepidation lies. Fourth albums are generally the re-invent albums and can make or break some bands. I hope this one is maker. Early reports have AOF experimenting with atmospherics and more open conceptual ideas. Could this be Kid A with screaming? I pray it is.
Also up is Dan Mangan. I know you don’t know who that is, but you damn well should. Dan will be realeasing a teaser EP entitled Roboteering in March and a full-length in August.
